"The New Year's Dragon!" Discussion

  • Hey guys. Yeah...I didn't know there was an new episode this month until the premire already happened. >_>; And if you haven't noticed, I don't come here as often as I used to so..y'know. (I'll eleaborate on that some time in the future...) Sorry about not giving you guys a heads up. I'm pretty sure it'll air again next week and if you have On Demand, you can watch it there.

So...what are your thoughts about this episode?

    • My thoughts:

Good: Well Kai Lan ain't the only one at least, Yellow Curl understood that she and they were 6, Thank goodness Gil Finally got to scare someone other than someone else scaring him.

Bad: How come they didn't mention where Oona comes from (i forgot what it's called) is that not it?, Do all the story segments have to have a scary guy in the beginning but suddenly become a good guy in the end?

    • I thought it was kinda funny, but still sad, when Nonny plugged his ears when the drummers came by. Poor guy, sensitive to loud noises. And then HE, of all people, waves at the camera. Isn't that, like, Deema's job or something?

Wasn't Nonners rumored to be autistic or something?

And yes, it's usually Deema who breaks the fourth wall.

And I haven't seen the episode yet. I might go and watch if I have time.

Yeah...I was really scared when he did that because he smiled and it wasn't like him, so I just freaked out like OHMYGOSH NONNY SMILED I DIDNT KNOW HE DID THAT ANYMORE, because all his smiling power was used up in season 1, really.

    • I just watched this episode for the first time and it was pretty darn good. I gotta give the writers credit that they managed to do this episode very well since they've never tackled another culture before. So I'll talk about each individual element.

-The intro was pretty good and I liked the acrobat characters. They did a good job explaining the concept of Chinese New Year.

-The pop song was OK, but I think I enjoyed the visuals more than the song itself. But there's nothing wrong with that.

-The lunch joke was pretty lame. I've heard worse and better.

-The classroom segment was one of the most entertaining aspects of this episode. Goby asking for a fork for his noodles and Nonny explaining what chopsticks are was VERY cute, especially seeing Nonny using the chopsticks. Mr. Grouper being a panda was also cute, as well as Gil scaring him with the dragon puppet.

-Story segment was OK. I actually thought that a panda was chasing Gil and Goby, but instead it was a Peking duck. Of course the ending punchline ("They all lived happily... I mean, quackily, ever after") was an adorable moment.

-The field trip at the parade was good too. I saw that Nonny plugged his ears after the drummers walked past. Not only that, but his eyes were closed and he looked distressed. That was pretty surprising, the poor dear. I liked how they stepped in and controlled the dragon. Of course the cherry on top of the cake was Nonny waving to the camera and SMILING. IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Final verdict: The fact that they handled another culture so tastefully made me feel happy and relieved. There's also the important fact that the acrobats in the opening and the announcer at the parade didn't have stereotypical Asian accents, which was another sigh of relief. This was also an informative episode. They explained that so many things were invented in China such as noodles, kites, and paper. I legitimately didn't know that. Of course the most surprising fact is how Chinese New Year is celebrated all over the world. Woah, that blew my mind. I thought it was just a Chinese (duh) and American thing.

Wow, this was a long review. Long story short, this was a good episode that I would definitely watch again and look forward to watching it again.
